Let F:M→NF : M \to N be a local isometry between connected Riemannian manifolds MM and NN. Show that if MM is complete, so is NN and FF is a covering map.

?

Let F:M→MF : M \to M be an isometry of a Riemannian manifold MM.

?
(a)

Show that each component of X={x∈M:F(x)=x}X = \{ x \in M : F(x)=x\} is an embedded totally geodesic submanifold of MM.

(b)

Give an example in which the components of XX have different dimensions.

The space Rn×n\mathbb {R}^{n\times n} of n×nn\times n real matrices forms an n2n^2-dimensional Euclidean space, in which the dot product between A=[aij]A=[a_{ij}] and B=[bij]B=[b_{ij}] is given by

⟨A,B⟩:=∑i=1n∑j=1naijbij. \left\langle A, B \right\rangle := \sum _{i=1}^n \sum _{j=1}^n a_{ij}b_{ij}.

Let Sn−1S^{n-1} be the unit sphere in Rn\mathbb {R}^{n}, and define σ:Sn−1→Rn×n\sigma : S^{n-1} \to \mathbb {R}^{n\times n} as the map sending x=(x1,…,xn)\mathbf{x} = (x_1,\ldots ,x_n) in Sn−1S^{n-1} to the symmetric matrix σ(x)=12[xixj]\sigma (\mathbf{x}) = \frac{1}{\sqrt2}[x_ix_j].

?
(a)

Show that σ\sigma maps Sn−1S^{n-1} into the sphere of radius 12\frac{1}{\sqrt2} centered at the origin in Rn×n\mathbb {R}^{n\times n}.

(b)

Prove that σ\sigma is a local isometry (i.e., the pull-back via σ\sigma of the dot-product metric defined above on Rn×n\mathbb {R}^{n\times n} is the standard one on Sn−1S^{n-1}).

Let ϕ:Rn→Rn\phi : \mathbb {R}^{n} \to \mathbb {R}^{n} be any isometry, that is, a map such that the Euclidean distance between any two points x,y∈Rnx,y \in \mathbb {R}^{n} is equal to the distance between their images ϕ(x),ϕ(y)\phi (x), \phi (y). Show that ϕ\phi is affine linear, that is, there exists a vector b∈Rnb \in \mathbb {R}^{n} and an orthogonal matrix A∈O(n)A \in O(n) such that for all x∈Rnx \in \mathbb {R}^{n}, ϕ(x)=Ax+b\phi (x) = Ax+b.
