The following matrices over C\mathbb {C} are called Pauli matrices:

σ0=∥1001∥,σ1=∥0110∥,σ2=∥0−ii0∥,σ3=∥100−1∥. \sigma _{0}=\left\Vert \begin{smallmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \end{smallmatrix}\right\Vert , \quad \sigma _{1}=\left\Vert \begin{smallmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{smallmatrix}\right\Vert , \quad \sigma _{2}=\left\Vert \begin{smallmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{smallmatrix}\right\Vert , \quad \sigma _{3}=\left\Vert \begin{smallmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{smallmatrix}\right\Vert .

Let us set

T1=12iσ1,T2=−12iσ2,T3=12iσ3 T_{1}=\frac{1}{2} i \sigma _{1}, \quad T_{2}=-\frac{1}{2} i \sigma _{2}, \quad T_{3}=\frac{1}{2} i \sigma _{3}

Obviously,

⟨T1,T2,T3⟩C=sl(2)⟨T1,T2,T3⟩R=su(2) \begin{aligned} \left\langle T_{1}, T_{2}, T_{3}\right\rangle _{\mathbb {C}} & =\mathfrak {s l}(2) \\ \left\langle T_{1}, T_{2}, T_{3}\right\rangle _{\mathbb {R}} & =\mathfrak {s u}(2) \end{aligned}

Verify that

[T1,T2]=T3,[T3,T1]=T2,[T2,T3]=T1 \left[T_{1}, T_{2}\right]=T_{3}, \quad \left[T_{3}, T_{1}\right]=T_{2}, \quad \left[T_{2}, T_{3}\right]=T_{1}

the Hermitian matrices of size 2×22 \times 2 with zero trace form a linear subspace VH0V_{H}^{0} of the real space VHV_{H} of all Hermitian matrices of size 2×22 \times 2;

(2)

the dimension of the space VH0V_{H}^{0} equals three, and as a basis one can take the so-called Pauli matrices:

S1=(0110),S2=(0−ii0),S3=(100−1) S_{1} =\left(\begin{smallmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{smallmatrix}\right), \quad S_{2} =\left(\begin{smallmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{smallmatrix}\right), \quad S_{3} =\left(\begin{smallmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{smallmatrix}\right)
(3)
