Call a normal vector field vv along a space curve γ\gamma parallel if v′v' is always tangent to γ\gamma.

?
(a)

Show that the angle through which a parallel normal vector field vv turns relative to the principal normal NN along γ\gamma is given by the total torsion of γ\gamma, i.e.,

θ(L)−θ(0)=∫0Lτ(s) ds. \theta (L) - \theta (0) = \int _0^L \tau (s) \, ds.

Here ss and LL denote arclength and the length of γ\gamma, respectively.

(b)

Show that the total torsion of any closed curve γ\gamma which lies on a sphere in R3\mathbb {R}^{3} must vanish.

Let α\alpha and β\beta be two regular curves in R3\mathbb {R}^{3}. The curve β\beta is called an involute of α\alpha if for all tt, β(t)\beta (t) lies on the line tangent to α\alpha at α(t)\alpha (t) and ⟨α′(t),β′(t)⟩=0\left\langle \alpha '(t), \beta '(t) \right\rangle = 0. Show that every involute of a generalized helix α\alpha is a plane curve. (Recall that α\alpha is a generalized helix if for some constant vector u≠0u \neq 0, ⟨u,α′(s)⟩=const\left\langle u, \alpha '(s) \right\rangle = \text{const}, where ss is arclength for α\alpha.)
