Let XX be compact and suppose there is a norm on C(X)C(X) that is given by an inner product making C(X)C(X) into a Hilbert space such that for every xx in XX the functional f↦f(x)f \mapsto f(x) on C(X)C(X) is continuous with respect to the Hilbert space norm. Show that XX is finite.

Let SS be a subspace of C[0,1]C[0,1] and suppose that there exists a constant K≥0K \geq 0 such that ∥f∥max⁡≤K∥f∥2\left\| f\right\|_{\max } \leq K\left\| f\right\|_{2} for all f∈Sf \in S. Prove that SS is finitedimensional.

Let XX be a closed subspace of L2(0,1)L^{2}\left(0,1\right) which is contained in C[0,1]C[0,1]. Prove that:

?
(a)

There exists A>0A>0 such that ∥f∥max⁡≤A∥f∥2\left\| f\right\|_{\max } \leq A\left\| f\right\|_{2} for all f∈Xf \in X.

(b)

For each x∈[0,1]x \in [0,1] there exists hx∈Xh_{x} \in X such that f(x)=⟨f,hx⟩f(x)= \left\langle f, h_{x} \right\rangle for all f∈Xf \in X, and ∥hx∥2≤A\left\| h_{x}\right\|_{2} \leq A.

(c)

The dimension of XX is at most A2A^{2}.
