Decimal expansions and digits
[5/100%]Let
be a prime number expressed in the decimal system, , ; . Then the polynomial
is irreducible.
Cf. Problem 127, Problem 24 of Part III.
Let
be a positive number expressed in the decimal system, , . The power series with integral coefficients represents a rational function if is rational, and does not represent a rational function if is irrational.
Let be a prime number and relatively prime to . The arithmetic mean of the digits in a period of the expression of as a decimal fraction is 4.5 if and only if the length of the period is an even number.
The decimal fraction
(formed by writing consecutively all the prime numbers) is irrational. [249, 110.]
The question whether the number has the property that the arithmetic mean of its first decimal places converges to 4.5 must be left unresolved. If however the number has this property then the number has the same property.
