A complex number zz is said to be algebraic if there are integers a0,…,ana_{0}, \ldots , a_{n}, not all zero, such that

a0zn+a1zn−1+⋯+an−1z+an=0 a_{0} z^{n}+a_{1} z^{n-1}+\cdots +a_{n-1} z+a_{n} = 0

Prove that the set of all algebraic numbers is countable. Hint: For every positive integer NN there are only finitely many equations with

n+∣a0∣+∣a1∣+⋯+∣an∣=N n+\left|a_{0}\right|+\left|a_{1}\right|+\cdots +\left|a_{n}\right| = N
?

Prove that there exist real numbers which are not algebraic.

?

Given that π\pi is not the zero of a nonzero polynomial with rational coefficients, prove that π2\pi^{2} cannot be written in the form aπ+ba\pi +b, where aa and bb are rational.

?

Prove that the set of algebraic numbers is countable.

?

Prove the countability of the set of algebraic numbers, i.e., numbers that are roots of polynomials in one variable with integer coefficients.

?

Prove the existence of transcendental (nonalgebraic) numbers.
