Let ff and gg be two continuous functions with bounded variation on [a,b][a,b]. Prove that the set (f(x),g(x))(f(x),g(x)), x∈[a,b]x\in [a,b], cannot fill the square. Is this true without the requirement of bounded variation?

On the interval [0,1]\left[0,1\right] define functions φ\varphi and ψ\psi as follows. Let t∈[0,1],t=∑3−kαkt \in [0,1], t=\sum 3^{-k} \alpha_{k}, where αk∈{0,1,2}\alpha_{k} \in \left\{ 0,1,2\right\}. Then φ(t)=∑3−kβk\varphi (t)=\sum 3^{-k} \beta_{k}, where β1=α1,β2=α3\beta_{1}=\alpha_{1}, \beta_{2}=\alpha_{3}, if α2\alpha_{2} is an even number, β2=2−α3\beta_{2}=2-\alpha_{3}, if α2\alpha_{2} is an odd number, βn=α2n−1\beta_{n}=\alpha_{2 n-1}, if α2+α4+…+α2n−2\alpha_{2}+\alpha_{4}+\ldots +\alpha_{2 n-2} is an even number, and βn=2−α2n−1\beta_{n}=2-\alpha_{2 n-1}, if α2+α4+…+α2n−2\alpha_{2}+\alpha_{4}+\ldots +\alpha_{2 n-2} is an odd number (n⩾2n \geqslant 2). Similarly, ψ(t)=∑3−kγk\psi (t)=\sum 3^{-k} \gamma_{k}, where γ1=α2\gamma_{1}=\alpha_{2}, if α1\alpha_{1} is an even number, γ1=2−α2\gamma_{1}=2-\alpha_{2}, if α1\alpha_{1} is an odd number, γn=α2n\gamma_{n}=\alpha_{2 n}, if α1+α3+…+α2n−1\alpha_{1}+\alpha_{3}+\ldots +\alpha_{2 n-1} is an even number, and γn=2−α2n\gamma_{n}=2-\alpha_{2 n}, if α1+α3+…+α2n−1\alpha_{1}+\alpha_{3}+\ldots +\alpha_{2 n-1} is an odd number.

(a)

Prove that the functions φ\varphi and ψ\psi are well defined and continuous.

(b)

Let f:[0,1]→R2f:\left[0,1\right] \rightarrow \mathbb {R}^{2} be the map with coordinate functions φ\varphi and ψ\psi (f(t)=(φ(t),ψ(t))f(t)=(\varphi (t), \psi (t)) for t∈[0,1])t \in [0,1]). Prove that ff maps the interval [0,1]\left[0,1\right] onto the square [0,1]2\left[0,1\right]^{2}. The map ff is described schematically in Fig. 7. Each of the intervals Δk(k=1,2,…,9)\Delta_{k}(k=1,2, \ldots , 9) is mapped onto the square with the same number (Fig. 7,a7, a). Fig. 7,b shows the traversal of the unit square upon dividing the interval into 929^{2} parts.

(c)

Prove that the system of equations

φ(t)=ξ,ψ(t)=η \varphi (t)=\xi , \quad \psi (t)=\eta

has at most four solutions for any ξ,η∈[0,1]\xi , \eta \in [0,1]. Indicate pairs ξ,η\xi , \eta for which this system has four solutions.

(d)

Prove that the sets of constancy of the functions φ\varphi and ψ\psi (i.e., the sets φ−1({c})\varphi^{-1}(\left\{ c\right\} ) and ψ−1({c}),c∈R\psi^{-1}(\left\{ c\right\} ), c \in \mathbb {R}) have no isolated points.

(e)

Prove that φ,ψ∈Lip⁡1/2([0,1])\varphi , \psi \in \operatorname {Lip}_{1 / 2}(\left[0,1\right]), but φ,ψ∉Lip⁡α([0,1])\varphi , \psi \notin \operatorname {Lip}_{\alpha }(\left[0,1\right]), if α>12\alpha >\frac{1}{2}.

A continuous map of an interval onto a square is called a Peano curve. Let uu and vv be the coordinate functions of an arbitrary Peano curve defined on the interval [0,1]\left[0,1\right]. Prove that if u,v∈Lip⁡α([0,1])u, v \in \operatorname {Lip}_{\alpha }(\left[0,1\right]), then α⩽12\alpha \leqslant \frac{1}{2}. (Thus, the smoothness of the coordinate functions of the Peano curve constructed in the previous problem is the best possible).

Let ff be a continuous real function on R1\mathbb {R}^{1} with the following properties: 0≤f(t)≤1,f(t+2)=f(t)0 \leq f(t) \leq 1, f(t+2) = f(t) for every tt, and

f(t)={0(0≤t≤13)1(23≤t≤1) f(t) = \begin{cases} 0 & \left(0 \leq t \leq \frac{1}{3}\right) \\ 1 & \left(\frac{2}{3} \leq t \leq 1\right)\end{cases}

Put Φ(t)=(x(t),y(t))\Phi (t) = (x(t), y(t)), where

x(t)=∑n=1∞2−nf(32n−1t),y(t)=∑n=1∞2−nf(32nt) x(t) = \sum _{n = 1}^{\infty } 2^{-n} f\left(3^{2 n-1} t\right), \quad y(t) = \sum _{n = 1}^{\infty } 2^{-n} f\left(3^{2 n} t\right)

Prove that Φ\Phi is continuous and that Φ\Phi maps I=[0,1]I = [0,1] onto the unit square I2⊂R2I^{2} \subset \mathbb {R}^{2}. If fact, show that Φ\Phi maps the Cantor set onto I2I^{2}.

Hint: Each (x0,y0)∈I2\left(x_{0}, y_{0}\right) \in I^{2} has the form

x0=∑n=1∞2−na2n−1,y0=∑n=1∞2−na2n x_{0} = \sum _{n = 1}^{\infty } 2^{-n} a_{2 n-1}, \quad y_{0} = \sum _{n = 1}^{\infty } 2^{-n} a_{2 n}

where each aia_{i} is 0 or 1. If

t0=∑i=1∞3−i−1(2ai) t_{0} = \sum _{i = 1}^{\infty } 3^{-i-1}\left(2 a_{i}\right)

show that f(3kt0)=akf\left(3^{k} t_{0}\right) = a_{k}, and hence that x(t0)=x0,y(t0)=y0x\left(t_{0}\right) = x_{0}, y\left(t_{0}\right) = y_{0}. (This simple example of a so-called "space-filling curve" is due to I. J. Schoenberg, Bull. A.M.S., vol. 44, 1938, pp. 519).
