Prove that each of the following conditions is equivalent to the essential selfadjointness of an operator AA:

  1. A∗A^* is selfadjoint;

  2. Aˉ=A∗\bar A=A^*.

?

In which of the following cases is the operator A=i d/dxA=i\, d/dx in H=L2(0,1)H=L^{2}\left({0,1}\right) symmetric, essentially selfadjoint, or selfadjoint:

?
(a)

DA=C1[0,1]D_A=C^1[0,1],

(b)

DA={φ∈C1[0,1], φ(0)=φ(1)}D_A=\left\{ \varphi \in C^1[0,1],\ \varphi (0)=\varphi (1)\right\},

(c)

DA={φ∈C1[0,1], φ(0)=φ(1)=0}D_A=\left\{ \varphi \in C^1[0,1],\ \varphi (0)=\varphi (1)=0\right\}?

Suppose that H=l2(C)H=l_2(\mathbb {C}), DAD_A consists of all the finitely nonzero sequences with zero sum, and AA is the operator given by the matrix A=(ajk)A=(a_{jk}), where ajk=isign⁡(j−k)a_{jk}=i\operatorname {sign}\left(j-k\right).

?
(a)

Is AA symmetric?

(b)

Is AA essentially selfadjoint?

Let AiA_i, i=1,2i=1,2, be the operator of multiplication by xx in L2(R,dx)L^{2}\left({\mathbb {R},dx}\right) with domains DAiD_{A_i}. Suppose that A1A_1 and A2A_2 are essentially selfadjoint. Is it possible that the subspaces DA1D_{A_1} and DA2D_{A_2} have zero intersection?

?

Suppose that the operator AA is densely defined and positive (see Problem 643). Prove that AA is essentially selfadjoint if and only if ker⁡(A∗+1)={0}\ker (A^*+1)=\left\{ 0\right\}.

?

Suppose that H1H_1 and H2H_2 are Hilbert spaces, and H1⊗H2H_1\otimes H_2 their Hilbert tensor product. Prove that if A1A_1 and A2A_2 are selfadjoint operators in H1H_1 and H2H_2, respectively, then the operator A1⊗1+1⊗A2A_1\otimes 1+1\otimes A_2, with domain DA1⊗DA2D_{A_1}\otimes D_{A_2}, is essentially selfadjoint in HH.
