Let MM be a 2-dimensional manifold smoothly embedded in R3\mathbb {R}^{3} with unit normal nn.

?
(a)

Explain what is meant by intrinsic and extrinsic quantities on MM.

(b)

Are the principal curvatures intrinsic?

(c)

Discuss why the covariant derivative on MM, defined using the covariant derivative on R3\mathbb {R}^{3}, is intrinsic.

(d)

Assuming (c), discuss why the Gauss curvature of MM is intrinsic.

Show that the ellipsoid x2+2y2+3z2=1x^2+2y^2+3z^2=1 is not isometric to any sphere x2+y2+z2=r2x^2+y^2+z^2=r^2.

Let X⊂R3X \subset \mathbb {R}^{3} be the cone x2=y2+z2x^2=y^2+z^2, and let YY be the torus (x2+y2−2)2+z2=1(\sqrt{x^2+y^2}-2)^2+z^2=1, that is, the torus obtained by rotating the circle (x−2)2+z2−1=y=0(x-2)^2+z^2-1=y=0 around the zz-axis.

(a)

Show that for any point p∈Xp \in X other than the vertex (0,0,0)(0,0,0), there is a neighborhood of pp in XX isometric to an open subset of the Euclidean plane R2\mathbb {R}^{2}.

(b)

Show that no open subset of YY is isometric to any open subset of the Euclidean plane.

The differential of the arc length on some surface is expressed by the formula ds2=A(x,y) dx2+B(x,y) dy2ds^{2}=A(x,y)\, dx^{2}+B(x,y)\, dy^{2}. Introducing new variables by the formulas u=P(x,y)u=P(x,y), v=Q(x,y)v=Q(x,y), where PP and QQ are some functions, the formula for ds2ds^{2} can be given the form ds2=du2+dv2ds^{2}=du^{2}+dv^{2} if the functions PP and QQ satisfy the conditions

(∂P∂x)2+(∂Q∂x)2=A(x,y),(∂P∂y)2+(∂Q∂y)2=B(x,y), \left(\frac{\partial P}{\partial x}\right)^{2}+\left(\frac{\partial Q}{\partial x}\right)^{2}=A(x,y), \quad \left(\frac{\partial P}{\partial y}\right)^{2}+\left(\frac{\partial Q}{\partial y}\right)^{2}=B(x,y), ∂P∂x∂P∂y+∂Q∂x∂Q∂y=0. \frac{\partial P}{\partial x}\frac{\partial P}{\partial y}+\frac{\partial Q}{\partial x}\frac{\partial Q}{\partial y}=0.

Prove that, for such PP and QQ to be selectable, the functions A(x,y)A(x,y) and B(x,y)B(x,y) must satisfy the condition

∂(1A∂B∂x)∂x+∂(1B∂A∂y)∂y=0. \frac{\partial \left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{A}}\frac{\partial \sqrt{B}}{\partial x}\right)}{\partial x}+\frac{\partial \left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{B}}\frac{\partial \sqrt{A}}{\partial y}\right)}{\partial y}=0.
