Problem 12.4 from Heil C. "A Basis Theory Primer" [Hei11]More problems in Chapter 12 "Wavelet Bases and Frames"

This exercise will consider wavelet sets in one dimension. For simplicity we fix b=1b = 1, but allow any dilation parameter a>1a > 1.

Let EE be a measurable subset of R\mathbb {R}. We say that EE tiles by translation if ∪k∈Z(E+k)=R\cup_{k \in \mathbb {Z}}(E+k) = \mathbb {R} up to a set of measure zero and the overlaps (E+j)∩(E+k)(E+j) \cap (E+k) have measure zero for j≠kj \neq k. Similarly, EE tiles by dilation if ∪n∈Z(an)E=R\cup_{n \in \mathbb {Z}}\left(a^{n}\right) E = \mathbb {R} up to a set of measure zero and (amE)∩(anE)\left(a^{m} E\right) \cap \left(a^{n} E\right) has measure zero when m≠nm \neq n.

?
(a)

Prove that if EE tiles by translation then {e2πikx}k∈Z\left\{ e^{2 \pi i k x}\right\}_{k \in \mathbb {Z}} is an orthonormal basis for L2(E)L^{2}(E).

(b)

Show that if EE tiles both by translation and by dilation and ψ^=χE\widehat{\psi } = \chi_{E}, then {DanTkψ}k,n∈Z\left\{ D_{a^{n}} T_{k} \psi \right\}_{k, n \in \mathbb {Z}} is an orthonormal basis for L2(R)L^{2}(\mathbb {R}). Therefore EE is a wavelet set in this case.

(c)

Suppose that {DanTkψ}k,n∈Z\left\{ D_{a^{n}} T_{k} \psi \right\}_{k, n \in \mathbb {Z}} is an orthonormal basis for L2(R)L^{2}(\mathbb {R}), where ψ^=χE\widehat{\psi } = \chi_{E}. Show that EE tiles by translation and by dilation.

(d)

Show that E=[−1,−12]∪[12,1]E = \left[-1,-\frac{1}{2}\right] \cup \left[\frac{1}{2}, 1\right] is a wavelet set if we take a=2a = 2. Verify the explicit formula for the Shannon wavelet ψ\psi given in equation (12.6).

Problem 12.39 from Heil C. "A Basis Theory Primer" [Hei11]More problems in Chapter 12 "Wavelet Bases and Frames"
?
(a)

Show that the Journé set EE defined in equation (12.65) is a wavelet set (use Exercise 12.4).

(b)

Define ψ^=χE\widehat{\psi } = \chi_{E}, and suppose that ψ\psi was associated with an MRA. Let φ\varphi be the scaling function for this MRA. Use Exercise 12.38 to show that ∣φ^∣=χF\left|\widehat{\varphi }\right| = \chi_{F}, where

F=[−87,−1]∪[−47,−12]∪[−27,27]∪[12,47]∪[1,87]. F = \left[-\frac{8}{7},-1\right] \cup \left[-\frac{4}{7},-\frac{1}{2}\right] \cup \left[-\frac{2}{7}, \frac{2}{7}\right] \cup \left[\frac{1}{2}, \frac{4}{7}\right] \cup \left[1, \frac{8}{7}\right].
(c)

Use the equation φ^(ξ)=m0(ξ/2)φ^(ξ/2)\widehat{\varphi }(\xi ) = m_{0}(\xi / 2) \widehat{\varphi }(\xi / 2) to show that ∣m0(ξ)∣=1\left|m_{0}(\xi )\right| = 1 for ξ∈[−27,27]\xi \in \left[-\frac{2}{7}, \frac{2}{7}\right]. Since m0m_{0} is 1 -periodic, this also shows that ∣m0(ξ)∣=1\left|m_{0}(\xi )\right| = 1 for ξ∈[57,97]\xi \in \left[\frac{5}{7}, \frac{9}{7}\right]. Show that if ξ∈[1,87]\xi \in \left[1, \frac{8}{7}\right] then φ(2ξ)=0\varphi (2 \xi ) = 0 but ∣m0(ξ)φ(ξ)∣=1\left|m_{0}(\xi ) \varphi (\xi )\right| = 1. Conclude that ψ\psi cannot be associated with an MRA.

(d)

For an alternative proof that ψ\psi cannot be associated with an MRA, compute Φφ(ξ)=∑k∈Z∣φ^(ξ+k)∣2\Phi_{\varphi }(\xi ) = \sum_{k \in \mathbb {Z}}\left|\widehat{\varphi }(\xi +k)\right|^{2}, and use this to obtain a contradiction.
